Apple details iPad Pro manufacturing process in response to bent units

Apple has just published a new support page detailing the manufacturing process that explains the “subtle deviations in flatness as an assurance the the slight bend on the iPad Pro is not a problem.

According to the page, the LTE models were manufactured using a process called co-molding, which basically a high temperature process involving the injection of plastic into milled channels within the aluminum case. At the end of the manufacturing process, Apple allows for no more than 400 microns of deviation across the length of any side. In addition, the new straight-edged design of the iPad Pro may render bends “more visible only from certain viewing angles,” although that will not affect performance in any way.

In any case, customers who feel that their iPad Pro is bent beyond the 400 micron point can still file for a warranty, as Apple covers damage due to defects in materials or workmanship.
