12 August 2019 to see arrival of Samsung’s 108-megapixel ISOCELL sensor

Samsung has been working on smartphone camera development a lot lately. Redmi and Realme will be using Samsung’s new 64MP camera, the former having been made official. After Xiaomi unveiling plans to use the 64MP sensor, Xiaomi’s CEO believes Samsung’s 100MP (108MP to be specific) camera won’t be far off.

On Twitter, Samsung announced a new ISOCELL sensor will be released 12 August, claiming it will “redefine the resolution” of cameras. There were no specifics, but the industry believes it will be the 108MP sensor. Xiaomi previously disclosed the camera’s resolution, at 12032 x 9024.

Xiaomi thinks the Samsung 108MP would be the largest image sensor on the market. The large photosensitive area will be able to provide higher light input. Xiaomi didn’t provide any further details of the smartphone using such a sensor. Current theory is that it’ll be on the upcoming Xiaomi Mi MIX 4. Lei Jun, Xiaomi Chairman and CEO had previously said the company was working on a smartphone with a 108MP sensor.
