Asus DV1 Review

What's in the box:
When it comes to the package, xcute has outdone all the big names in mobile industry. If you thought Sharp 902 had lots of goodie in the box then you'll be happy to know that xcute dv1 comes with even more accessories. The box includes

  • Phone Battery
  • Extra Battery
  • Desktop charger
  • Regular Charger
  • USB Cable
  • Stereo Headset
  • Software Cd (which includes video conversion software, stampics and USB drivers)
  • Audio/Video Cable
  • Leather Carrying Case (really nice quality)

This is without doubt the most “bang for your buck” that I've ever seen in a phone.

Built Quality: Keypad does exactly what is suppose to with good response and feel. Keys are well arranged except for the top buttons, which can be pressed mistakenly instead of the arrow keys. Keypad lights up blue in color, which looks pretty cool at night.

    Battery Life:
Battery life is kinda iffy especially if you consider the small size of the phone. So far the best I was able to was about a day and half with 20 mins of calling, 15 mins of audio recording, half an hour of video watching, some picture taking and video recording.

Since the battery life is not so great, xcute compensated it by providing extra battery and desktop charger. This extra battery will come really handing, if you are planning to make a videos or take alot of pics.

    RF and Sound Quality:
RF is on the medium side because I get signals at most places where I used get signals with my Gx32 but there are some places (at work) where 902 used to give me at one bar but Dv1 just goes to blank.

like RF, sound volume is on a medium level too. It's neither very high nor very low. It's at a comfortable level where you can listen to the other party clearly and the other party can understand what you are saying. As far as the speaker phone is concerned, due to having only one speaker (unlike 902, which has stereo) the quality is decent but nothing extra ordinary.

Features: As far as features are concerned, xcute has a truckload of them. Below are the features in detail. 1) Camera:

    a) Still Camera:
From the time you press the button to take the pic to the time the camera is ready to take another pic takes about 4 seconds and that's on 3 megapixel. This is simply amazing because Sharp 902 takes pretty much same time in just focusing the object and then another few seconds to save the pic (2mp picture). There is absolutely no shutter lag, not even at night.

Dv1 has TONS of settings to help take great pictures.

    b) Video Camera:
Video camera is without any doubt the best ever on any mobile phone. Xcute dv1 can record video in avi, asf and mov format at 30 fps. The video recording quality is almost identical to a video recorded with a regular VHS video camera.

    2) Voice Recording:
like other features, sound recording has tons of settings too. Best of all there is no time restriction on audio recording.

Codec Type: Using this function, you can select different sound recording formats. Totally 4 different modes –PCM8, PCM16, ULAW and ALAW are available.

Channel: Here you can adjust the sound filed to be MONO or STEREO.

Sampling Rate: With this function, you can set the capturing speed of sound you can select 8,000HZ 11,025HZ 12,000HZ 16,000HZ 22,050HZ 24,000HZ 32,000HZ 44,100HZ. The higher the value, the better the quality of sound.

    2) Mp3 player:
Mp3 player is xcute is not as good quality as Sharp 902 but with the stereo headset (included) it sounds decents. Mp3 player has five band pre-set equalizer which includes Classical, Jazz, Rock, Pop and Flat.

    3) Video Player
If you thought that Sharp 902's video playback was great, wait till you watch video on xcute DV1. Even though the screen is small than 902 the vidoes looks amazing. Xcute Dv1 supports playback of mov, avi and asf files that can be played at 30 fps.

One of the biggest problem that users had with Sharp 902 video playback was that the process of putting videos on the phone was very lengthy and cumbersome but in xcute dv1's case the process is as easy as 1,2,3. Just install the video software that comes with it, import any video file and the software will convert it to a dv1's recognized format.

You can also link/join all your videos that you took with the phone to make one big video file.

Unlike 902, you can rewind/forward your files in three different speeds 2x, 4x , 8x.

    4) Picture Viewer:
Pictures can be viewed as a slide show and also as thumbnails.

    Slide Show ModeThumbnail View Mode

    5) Other Features:
Some of other prominent features are

Pregnancy Calculator: You can calculate the possibility of pregnancy on any given day possible pregnancy date and the date of next menstruation by enter information relating to menstrual cycles.

Unit Converter: Can be used to convert units of weight and length.

User Profiles: Here you can not only set different tones for each profile, you can also setup "Answer Mode", which set whether an incoming call is answered by pressing any key or opening the cover.

Melody Compose: Here you can create your own ringtones.

Single Page AVI Menu: You can turn video files taken by DV1 into AVI dynamic files to make personalized main menu.

Zoomed Pictures: While viewing pictures, you can zoom in and press capture button to take picture of the zoomed picture.

    update
Found out two new cool features. 1) Just on top of the camera, there is a slider button which I thought was to switch between Macro and regular mode.....but I discovered that its actually a manual focus. 2) There is a cool power management feature where you can set a time at which the phone will automatically turn off or turn on. A really neat feature for nite time. Just set it up to turn off at night and then automatically turn on in the morning .......... No loss of batter life

So what do you guys think...........can it be K750 and N91 killer (just in camera and video) ?
