24 July 2012 – In May 2012, Sony introduced two water-resistant Android phones in the market, the Sony Xperia Go and Xperia Arco S. In this review, we shall cover the Xperia Go, the successor of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Active.
Exterior, Screen and Controls
On the exterior, the Sony Xperia Go shares similar shape and design with any other Xperia phones in 2012. The phone carries a dimension of 111 x 60.3 x 9.8mm which fits nicely in my palm. The Xperia Go is a relatively light phone, which only weighs 110g. It has a 3.5-inch display with 320 x 480 resolution pixels and is powered by Sony Mobile Bravia engine. The display is excellent but we think that the display resolution is relatively low for today’s standard. The display is protected by a scratch resistant mineral glass. Plus, the touch screen even works with your wet fingers.
There is a row of capacitive touch buttons (Back, Home and Menu) below the display. The power button sits on the top left corner of the phone. There is an audio jack on left side of the phone. On the right side, you will see a micro USB port and a volume rocker. Both the audio jack and USB port are covered with a plastic sealing.
Water and Dust Resistant
For the Xperia Go to be dust and water resistant, the cover of the audio jack and USB port must be firmly closed. According to Sony, the phone shall suffer no damage if it is submerged in the fresh water up to one meter for no longer than 30 minutes. On a downside, these plastic covers are quite difficult to remove unless you have a long finger nail.
The Xperia Go comes in black, white and yellow. At the time of writing, the yellow unit will be available in the third quarter of 2012. Our review unit is the white model and we found it gets dirty easily with stain.
Software, Application and Games
Under the hood, the Xperia Go is powered by a 1GHz NovaThor U8500 processor with 512MB of RAM. Even with the limited amount of RAM, the phone is responsive and we hardly notice any significant lags while switching apps. We have tested Fruit Ninja on the Xperia Go and it works just fine.
Unlike the Xperia Arco S, the Xperia Go runs on a dated Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread with Sony’s Timescape user interface. The good news is Sony will be offering the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich at a later point of time. Sony has bundled the phone with several apps of its own such as WalkMate, TrackID, Torch, PowerSaver and more.
Camera, Video and Audio
Sample image by the Xperia Go
This handy phone comes with a 5-megapixel camera with a LED flash. Sony has created a quick snap shortcut where you can simply slide from right to left from the lockscreen activate the camera and instantly capture a photo. This function is useful when you need to take once-in-a-lifetime photo quickly. It is also capable of taking 2D and 3D panoramas. It can record 720p HD video at 30fps. The Xperia Go also supports Sony’s xLoud sound enhancer to enhance your listening experience. It has an excellent loudspeaker at the back the phone.
Connectivity and Storage
Connectivity-wise, this phone supports HSDPA 14.4 Mbps, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS. Call quality on both ends is excellent for this phone. For storage, it has 8GB on-board memory, but only 4GB is user usable. Fortunately, the Xperia Go has a microSD card slot that accepts cards up to 32GB.
The Sony Xperia Go is one of the best weather proof Android phones with decent hardware specs and is reasonably priced at RM 999. This phone is recommended for travelers who are visiting places with extreme weather conditions.
Conclusion: An excellent weather proof Android phone with nifty features.
