LG Optimus 2X Review

APPLE iPhone fans who lay eyes on the LG Optimus 2X for the first time accuse it of being a copy of the iPhone 3Gs. It vaguely seems that way but the Optimus 2X has a character of its own.

A dark brown maroon back cover with the Google logo embossed on it and a beautiful touchscreen on the front, it is stately, refined and practical.

Shiny screen

Once the screen comes alive, you will be dazzled with the colours emanating from the touchscreen. We tried to scratch the shiny touchscreen but we could not which is a plus point.

Not only will you be impressed with the vibrant colours but LG took the liberty to customise the background, desktop, icons and Software on the phone.

There are a few customised apps like Twitter, Facebook and MySpace that has the "for LG" tag that offer additional minor features.

I went on a binge, downloading and installing 52 apps at one point. The Optimus 2X did lag slightly but stood its ground quite well. I do believe the phone only hung on me once while I was reviewing it.

So far, I have read more articles on the Optimus 2X's large and clear 4in capacitive touchscreen than I have in a long time and it is generally responsive.

Speedy smartphone

The phone comes with an nVidia Tegra 2 graphics chip which is supposed to be a big deal. I ran some benchmark tests using Quadrant Standard, a free app, that tests 3D graphics and other such things and the Optimux 2X beat the Nexus One, Samsung Galaxy S, HTC Desire and the Motorola Droid X hands down.

It is like a leopard in benchmark tests outrunning its competition and leaving them far behind.

Besides the fancy graphics chip, the Optimus 2X is fitted with a dual-core 1Ghz ARM Cortex-A9 processor. Yes, very decent specifications and for those of you who love hardware and want to be all pimped out, the LG Optimus 2X is something to have.
LG Optimus 2X Review DISAPPOINTING: The 8-megapixel camera was a letdown.

The 8-megapixel primary camera on the Optimus 2X was disappointing. Pictures were dark, dull and grainy.

Even with photography apps, photos still looked like they missed the mark. It seemed comparable to the secondary 1.3 megapixel camera which says a lot. When taking pictures, the camera makes a really loud sound that you cannot turn off. So, no discreet photo-taking.

The keyboard on the Optimus 2X is exactly like the one found on the Apple iPhone 4. So if you love the iPhone keyboard and want to use an Android, then the Optimus 2X is an option.

I wanted to type out my whole review on the LG Optimus 2X but imagined I would succumb to carpal tunnel syndrome faster.

Soft speakers

Watching videos was a pleasant visual experience but in terms of audio, it left me a bit wanting. The sound was muffled and it would probably be a good idea to use headphones.

The battery life is nothing noteworthy. But it all depends on how one intends to conserve energy. I did not fiddle with any of the brightness settings or stop any apps from running in the background so it was quite an intensive work-out for the phone although the operating system itself was running at more or less full speed using up half the RAM almost all the time.

I played Angry Birds for three hours straight and the battery juice dried up with less than half remaining.

The battery normally lasts 12 to 15 hours for me. This includes tweeting, reading and playing games. Also, not to mention the kind of heat this phone radiates. Yes, it gets warm to the touch quite fast and easily.
LG Optimus 2X Review SLEEK: The Optimus 2X is quite slim.

It was helpful that while I was reviewing the LG Optimus 2X, my tech savvy friends whipped out their iPhone 4s, HTCs and the Sony Xperia Arc for us to do some comparisons.

The retina display on the iPhone 4 definitely made a whole lot of difference because we could still make out really tiny fonts on it as compared to the Optimus 2X.

The Xperia Arc is a sleek Designer phone with the same screen size as the Optimus 2X but half its thickness. The HTC Incredible S was also a lot smaller than the Optimus 2X and even without a dual-core processor, it ran pretty smoothly.

Conclusion

All in all, the LG Optimus 2X is a value buy. If you are a diehard techie, you will be drawn to its over-the-top specifications. The massive touchscreen is also alluring - it's good for watching videos, reading and playing games. It comes with a HDMI port too so you can connect it to a HDTV.

Although the Optimus 2X may feel a little masculine and turn off the women folk, it is still a worthy contender in the arena of smartphones. It will serve its purpose and more.

It may help you stay in the game longer because upgrades will not be as necessary - not when it is three steps ahead of its competition in terms of hardware.

Pros: Dual-core processor, nVidia graphics chip, 4in vibrant display, HDMI port, decent price.

Cons: Disappointing camera; speakers could be better.
